NOTE: I would rank this at 3 1/2 stars, but Goodreads does not permit 1/2 star ratings.Singing sensation Carly Simon has suffered a double family tragedy. My gut feel on the reception from the kids will be mixed, but I won't know until I share this with them. BUT, even though I'm a longtime fan of Carly, I'm not the intended audience. I'm not sure how much of "Fisherman" will resonate with a pre-schooler, however.įor me, this was a good use of 30 minutes - coincidentally, my the duration of my morning drive-time. I don't mind texts with multiple levels - I loved Bullwinkle as a kid but found I didn't really appreciate it until I'd hit adulthood. The song is beautiful, but the lyrics contain depth that will go right over a child's head. "The Fisherman's Song" - Appears to be based on a song (which Carly is also kind enough to perform). However, I'm not sure that the grandkids would like this one as much as "Amy", despite the appearance of Santa Claus. The background sound was most critical on this book. "The Boy of the Bells" has the more traditional story flow, with an honest-to-G-d beginning and conclusion. I can imagine my granddaughter loving this book - I may try to find it in the library to test out that hypothesis! I wish the book had an actual ciimax and conclusion, as opposed to simply "an evening in the life", but that was the adult side. Of "Amy the Dancing Bear": I can picture a young child (of any species) not wanting to go to sleep because they are involved with something - dancing, in this case. Regarding the individual books that make up the CD: (I wonder why Audio Books aimed at adult don't use more of this technique!) I miss the illustrations which are important to most children's stories - I would imagine that the ultimate format for this work would be video combining words with pictures with music! The background music is appropriate, and enhances the stories tremendously. AND, as one of the books is based upon song lyrics, she reads the words and then sings the associated song, as well. I found that it wasn't simply her tone, but that she successfully conveyed the emotions that her characters are feeling. I found Carly's narration to be almost as beautiful while reading as it is while she is singing. I tried to appreciate the material in these books on two different levels - as an adult, and from the perspective of my young grandchildren. The CD "Bells, Bears, and Fishermen" contains 3 individual children's books by Carly Simon, read by the author.
